LITERACY 2014 -  OUR VISION

By 2014, The Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School will be a recognized leader and advocate for literacy and for championing the usage of cutting edge technological tools as well as expeditionary learning to infuse the development of literacy skills within all aspects of school life. Our school will be viewed as the “Champion of Literacy and Reading Development” within the Boston Public Schools. We will also be lauded nationally and internationally for successfully educating a diverse array of learners in developing a life-long love of reading.

It is our fundamental belief that all students can and will succeed. Therefore as a result of our collaborative efforts, LGF students will become highly literate young scholars who are aware of the world and of their responsibility to engage in it.

The LGF faculty will be comprised of leaders and scholars who are exemplars of what it means to be successful highly literate contributors to society, inspired by a shared vision of literacy and academic excellence, sustained by thoughtful and well-developed systems of support and accountability.

Our professional learning community will be one in which the best practices for teaching reading are modeled, implemented and explicitly taught. Collectively, all staff, parents, community members, partners, and students will work to ensure that the culture of our school community embraces the power and joy of literacy across all content areas as measured by improved formative assessments and resulting in empowered students, families and educators.

Through high expectations and differentiated instruction we will created a positive, nurturing and educational environment that promotes literacy in all disciplines. Evidence of our success will be apparent in the fact that LGF students will teach other students, family and community members to become powerful readers and writers.

Mini-Me Project

This is the first unit of the year for 6th graders in A4.  It is a way to build community and for students to reflect on the change in themselves from elementary school to middle school.  Through this interdisciplinary unit on autobiography/biography students explored the following content in each subject area:

*Math: Collecting, analyzing, and representing data through graphs (students took a survey to identify their learning style and graphed the results.

*English: Introduction to r/w workshop routines and the biography/autobiography genre by reading/ writing various biographies (including presidential candidates- which we tied into the next unit on the election) and then they wrote their own biographies
-Using sensory language to create I Am Poems
-Presentation skills (students presented their I-cards and autobiographies to peers and parents for culminating activity)

*History:
- Skill of using chronological order when developing a timeline (used to create their personal timeline and track early man and the origins of civilization).

Voices Against Violence
As part of their legacy and in response to a local gun incident at a school, 8th graders made a video to voice their concerns on important community issues. Later, they presented the video to a local elementary school and students.

Differentiation, Accommodation and Assessment

The Frederick school runs on a nearly full inclusion model. Teachers spend time creating modifications and accomodations to ensure that all students are able to access content and be academically competitive.  On the right side of the page you will find web links to online programs that are used to level work.

In the gallery below you will find images of rubrics and graphic organizers that are used to help ensure maximum student learning.
