VISION
The school’s mission and vision was created by a Planning Committee of community members prior to the opening of our school. Within their Pilot School Application, it is written as follows:
Our school will serve the whole child – mind, body, and spirit – as well as families and the community in which our students reside. The roots of the child – family, heritage, and community will be explored and developed as a source of knowledge and pride. This foundation will provide the launching pad for our students to develop to their full potential in intellect, character, and emotional well being, and spirit. Small learning communities and a strong sense of belonging will contribute to a positive learning climate where expectations for student achievement and behavior are high and good resources are provided to support students’ skill development and assist them in navigating rigorous curricula. Inquiry, exploration, experience and hands-on learning will facilitate and complement the core academic curricula and contribute to our vision of developing life long learners. This school will provide our students with comprehensive educational and support programs to develop the skills and experience they need to meet the challenge of high school, and further, to prepare for college or post high school training and the work skills needed in the 21st century.
We strongly believe that the education of students is the responsibility of the entire community, as reflected in the proverb, “It takes a village to educate a child.” We will provide a climate where caring the supportive parents and educators engage students to create a stimulating environment that will prepare them to live productive, successful lives in the 21st century. With positive self-images, social awareness and tolerance, our students will become responsible and mature leaders in a technological and multi-cultural society.
Our school will be a collaborative learning community committed to providing a rigorous academic program for all students in a nurturing environment. Through a problem based approach and standards driven instructional program, students will achieve high levels of performance as they acquire the knowledge necessary to become critical thinkers and problems solvers. Additionally, they will develop the skills needed to become productive citizens in a global community. Students’ families will be engaged as partners in our learning community. We believe that learning involves a commitment from students and teachers to learn together. We will seek to know each student well and design curricula to meet his or unique needs and strengths. We will teach students to ask good questions, to use their minds well, to develop skills as researchers, artists and leaders. We believe education should be relevant to students’ lives and challenging to their imaginations. We will address issues of peace and justice, wealth and power, racism and the creation of community and cultures. Our goal is to develop our students’ ability to use their minds and talents to create a community that, through its thought and actions, makes the world a better place. Our school will represent a community that encourages all members to be life-long learners.

Mission
The mission of Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School is to provide students in grades six through eight with a rigorous academic curriculum within a stimulating and nurturing environment. The school serves the whole child—mind, body and spirit—as well as families and the community in which the children reside. Inquiry, exploration, experience, connections and hands-on learning all facilitate and complement the core academic curricula and support the school’s vision of developing life-long learners.
